(formerly Academi) is the National Company for the development of literature in Wales.
Literature Wales includes Yr Academi Gymreig / The Welsh Academy - the national Society
of Writers in Wales, and Tŷ Newydd Writers’ Centre.
Literature Wales’ many projects and activities include Wales Book of the Year, the
National Poet of Wales, Writers on Tour funding scheme, writing courses at Tŷ Newydd,
Translators’ House Wales, the BayLit and Tŷ Newydd festivals and Young People’s Writing
Squads. It also has fieldworkers working specifically to develop literature activity
in the South Wales valleys and North Wales.
Devolved Voices is an exciting three-year research project starting in September
2012 and led by Professor Peter Barry with researchers Dr Matthew Jarvis (critic
and scholar of contemporary English-language poetry in Wales) and Kathryn Gray (editor
and poet). The project will investigate the state of Welsh poetry in English since
1997 and Wales’ ‘yes’ vote. The project has been generously funded by the Leverhulme
Trust, receiving a major award of £232,042.
